De Stijl - The Style

De Stijl - The Style

For the first schoolproject of the second year, we got the assignment to design for a Dutch artistic movement founded in 1917 called "De Stijl" or in englisch "The Style". Wich celebrated to be 100 years old. The assignment itself contained research and to design a poster and flyer. For the research we learned a lot about The Style and researched and experimented in the style itself.

First I will explain a little about The Style before I will show you my design. The Style consisted of artists and architects. In a narrower sense, the term De Stijl is used to refer to a body of work from 1917 to 1931 founded in the Netherlands. Proponents of De Stijl advocated pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and colour; they simplified visual compositions to vertical and horizontal, using only black, white and primary colors.

So after a lot of research I created two moodboards. I found that the primary colors needed to be the colors for the end design. Because they just scream The Style. I also wanted to keep geometric shapes. After getting an idea of the mood I wanted, I continued with sketching and experimenting.

One of the thigns what I wanted in the design was balance. The Style stands for balance and I wanted to give that my main priority. But because my sketches itself were not completely perfect I wanted to see how they looked digital.

So for the sketches I looked at the excisting work of all the artist from The Style. I wanted to let elements of the artist to come forward in the design. So I started with some exemples from there magazine, logo, font and even their paintings.

After the paper sketches I started sketching digital. To get the feeling I wanted in the design. After some experiments I found that Digital Sketch number 5 had a potentional of balance. It also represented the big artist Piet Mondriaan who was the founder of The Style.

When it was clear to use Digital Sketch number 5, I got the assignment to make a final sketch on paper. I used acrylic paint and a few brushes to create the final sketch. We went over all the final sketches with the whole class. And thanks to them I made a few final changes. Namely the old logo on the left was removed and the blue logo of Kröller Müller would get a different color. Besides that I had to watch the placement of the text

I made the changes and found balance in the design. You can see the final product below.

Final Design Poster The Style

After creating the poster we got the assignment to also create a flyer with the same style as the poster. So I took my poster design next to me and started sketching with the elements I wanted to get in the flyer.

The Style Flyer sketches

For the flyer I found it important to use the black beam for the title. This to create a recognizable element. I wanted to make the abstract design so that if it was folded it would continue. But I found it was hard to create a balanced feeling. fortunately a classmate came with an idea to create a ribbon of sort for his design wich would be good for mine to. But it gave me the idea to create lose ribbons. Wich created a luxe feeling and balance but also more interaction with the person reading the flyer. So for the final sketch I made a dummy. Sadly I don't have a good pictue of the dummy. But I got the scanned version of the final sketch.

The final product of the flyer was a great succes. It's design got lot's of attention because of the interactive design. Below you are able to see the final design of the inside of the flyer.

So here are the products together with the final report made in the same style. You can see the report below but it is in dutch. I got a high grade and I am happy that I was able to find balance in my design.
